Your Digital Marketing Career Might Be Under Threat

Your digital marketing career is under a serious threat!

Digital marketing is undoubtedly one of the best career choices for the future. Did you know that a degree is not required to be a digital marketer? It is related to your skills, interests, aptitude, and passion to start a career in digital marketing.  Therefore, anyone interested in this field has ample space to begin their career.

However, to fill the void of proper training and education in digital marketing, people are approaching the teaching of digital marketing incorrectly. The current trend is teaching students how to use tools like Semrush and Hubspot. Do you think learning an advanced tool without understanding the foundation of the subject is beneficial?  It is not. So do not fall for these silly money traps because they can cost you your future. Begin your career the right way by placing the core knowledge over the tools.

Learn strategy, not the tools.

Digital marketing doesn’t require fancy tools; it involves technique, understanding, and strategy. Recently, I came across the MBA course module on digital marketing. It was a poorly curated syllabus glamorized with software names. The truth is, you do not need all those tools to master the art of digital marketing.

Digital marketing is not just about the software- one must know when and where to use those tools to get the optimum result. Digital marketing tools are to make our tasks easier and not to take it over. Use the tools for the right use and the right cause.

The issue with tool-centric Learning

While some might argue, they feel empowered by learning tools and software for digital marketing. However, there are some underlying issues with tool-centric learning

1. Accessibility

Freshly graduated students are not financially able to afford expensive apps and tools. So, does this mean they can’t be digital marketers? Hence, the accessibility gap creates a problem with the tool-based learning and teaching method.

2. Lack of creativity

Digital marketing requires constant changes in technique and ideas to generate innovative campaigns. Using tools alone lacks the creative factor and makes the process repetitive. Digital marketing seeks innovation, vision, and originality that tools can never provide.

3. Illusion of mastery

Learning a tool gives you a sense of accomplishment, but the illusion shatters as soon as you need new tools or no tools. One cannot simply master digital marketing in a 12-hour course. It is a continuous learning process.

4. Inconsistency in result

Tools are never constant and just keep on changing. You cannot keep up with the changing market trends by solely relying on software. It might put your digital marketing career to a halt.

Learning digital marketing the right way

Learn digital marketing the right way. Here is the correct way to begin digital marketing studies: The goal is to prioritize Strategy over Tools.

1. Learn the fundamentals

The fundamentals of digital marketing include learning about the basics in depth. Have you ever imagined what happens to a building built on a weak base?  It crumbles over time. The same thing applies to learning digital marketing.

Hence, first understanding the base is important. The core of digital marketing is to understand:

  • Consumer behaviour
  • Marketing Principles
  • Content Strategy

2. Master Organic Marketing

Digital marketing is not just about optimizing paid ads, it is about learning how the ad works. Before selling products to customers, it is important to maintain a relationship with them.

  • Search Engine Optimization(SEO)
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Email Marketing

These tools help to build a lasting relationship with the customers and create campaigns that are likely to be successful.

3. Data-driven Strategy

Data and statistics complement digital marketing strategies and increase their efficiency. These strategies require critical and analytical thinking, which compels innovation and creation. A/B testing, Analytical tools, and other data-driven strategies can be used to create a data-driven strategy for digital marketing.

4. Learn by Doing

The best way to learn digital marketing is by doing it. Implement theoretical knowledge, make mistakes, learn, and grow. There is no secret formula to know it all; you need to explore yourself to master digital marketing.

5. Explore tools, don’t rely on it

Explore different digital marketing tools because each tool has different functions and uses. However, do not depend on a single tool because neither the tool nor the market demand is constant.

Can you truly master digital marketing?

No, you cannot truly master digital marketing. Digital marketing is always changing and never constant. A 12-hour curriculum certainly cannot make you a master of this. However, you can master some digital marketing skills such as SEO, Content creation, Content writing, and designing, but you have to keep yourself updated with the latest market trends.

In my more than a decade-long career in digital marketing, I can say that it has never stayed constant, forcing me to change with its ways. It is a learning and doing process that makes you skillful and knowledgeable about the subject but hardly a master.

Conclusion

Your digital marketing career may face a crisis if you are mistaking digital marketing as tool-based knowledge rather than strategy-based. However, learning it the right way can definitely help with that. Do you want to take your digital marketing one step further? Visit my website to learn more about digital marketing.
